I got up this morning and realized that it was the best day of the week, well
yeah it was Friday and the software engineer inside me screamed oh ma! TGIF, it
has been a tough and rough week as usual. With a bit of smile on my face I got
ready in my casuals (well most software engineers will get the connection
between Friday and casuals :) ). Had breakfast, got into my car and started
heading towards office. Listening to the great Jagjeet Singh on my system and
looking around the concrete jungle of Pune, a huge wave of thought came into my
mind (not for the first time though!).
Not many years ago was all this a farming land?
Oh my God, the place where I live used to be a farming land?
Damn the place where I work used to be a farming land too?
Then another wave came in my mind, "Oh man! what are we going to eat if this continues for next 50 years". Farmers are selling off their lands to builders and MNCs at high prices and enjoying the short term money. We, the young middle class generation are happy that new MNCs are creating new opportunities for us to earn money and become the so called "high class" or "higher middle class" and I really don't want to talk about the existing so called high class society, as they anyway don't care.
What are we earning for? Yes, for good life style (which is a very subjective term) and good food (no, not subjective). But how will we get this if farmers will keep running away from their profession and selling off there lands. Yes having nonveg is an option but what does a chicken or goat eat :)
Is there any school in India which teaches farming techniques, which inspires students to become farmers? Is the profession which gives us 2 wakt ka khana so out dated that no one wishes to do that? Looks like it is.
India was a land of farmers. A land where you could grow anything and everything. Mother earth has provided us with such favorable weather conditions but what did we do? We chose to become corporate professionals, sitting comfortably in the air conditioned offices and live a comformable but unhealthy life style. Then we spend money in the gym, yoga centers etc to stay fit and healthy. Funny, isn't it? Looks like we are stuck in a cycle (at least I am and I feel so sad about this).
With such farming friendly environment, we could have been a stronger farming country and outsourced our food products rather than outsourcing human resources to these blood sucking MNCs. We would have lived a much healthier lifestyle and I am sure eventually it would have helped our economy also.
No wonder farmers these days are committing suicide, no wonder inflation is growing beyond expectation.
Well what can we do now, I am not sure if we can do something, can we? Farmers used to be happy and proud of their profession but now they are frustrated.
'Food for thought' I feel will be the only food left for us in future :)
The world will surely end, there may be just a minor mistake in calculation...its not 2012 but may be 2112(or sooner), if nothing is done as soon as possible.

Well thought and put up my friend. I agree to the point that we could have been farmers professionally, however at the same time I think that we were raised to be Doctors, Engineers or Chartered Accountants. Is it not only the education system that promoted us and showed the way for the white collar jobs [we all know how 'White' they are (pun)]. Am not sure if it would have made the substantial difference, but definitely some visible difference..
ReplyDeleteTotally agree on education system that's the reason I have mentioned, none of the schools show the path of choosing profession like a farmer.
ReplyDeleteYes my thoughts too! Agriculture and manufacturing industry should have been the way for us! We are 20 years too late to make amends!!
ReplyDeleteIts never too late :)
ReplyDeleteNice writeup...
ReplyDeleteIt was for the first time in the indian history in last 18th and the early 19th century that the economy of an empire was completely based on agriculture. That too have been made possible by an illiterate emperor, Maharaja Ranjit Singh of the then Sarkar-e-Khalsa (Sikh Empire).
Today not only we have the same fertile land, but also an educated and technically well equipped farmer. The only need is to bring awareness among ourself and the grown ups. Agricultural engineering needs a boom now.
This reminds me of a dialog delivered by Anu Kapur in the movie 'Vicky donar' :-
"History te science kathe kathe chalde ne" (history and science goes together). :-)
This holds true in the current context also.
Cheers,
Jatinder
Good thought but without MNC economic can't get boom ,unlikely other country they depend upon agriculture but yes again we can think on this .I see now a days even we have little land that also no use because nobody there to farm on that,so problem is not mnc but rnc called real estate national company which are taking land and building un hygenic infrastructure to accommodate a 2 member neuclear family rather 20 member joint one.really space eating.
